Review and One Day Giveaway: Pandora’s Box by Katie Salidas

  • Pub. Date: June 2011
  • Publisher: Katie Salidas, via Smashwords
  • Sold By: SMASHWORDS – EBKS

Synopsis

After a few months as a vampire, Alyssa thought she’d learned all she needed to know about the supernatural world. But her confidence is shattered by the delivery of a mysterious package – a Pandora’s Box.
Seemingly innocuous, the box is in reality an ancient prison, generated by a magic more powerful than anyone in her clan has ever known. But what manner of evil could need such force to contain it?
When the box is opened, the sinister creature within is released, and only supernatural blood will satiate its thirst. The clan soon learns how it feels when the hunter becomes the hunted.
Powerless against the ancient evil, the clan flees Las Vegas for Boston, with only a slim hope for salvation. Could Lysander’s old journals hold the key? And what if they don’t?
And how welcome will they be in a city run by a whole different kind of supernatural being?
Werewolves…

My Thoughts:

This book picked up right where Hunters and Prey left off which was nice to see.   Fallon find a mysterious box on the door step and end up opening it even though Lyssa knows that this is a bad idea.  Fallon says that the box was calling to her to open it.  What happen next is terror for everyone.  They have unleashed something that it out to destroy them and does destroy Rozaline, Nicholas’ mate which put everyone on edge and trying to figure out how to get this spirit back in the box it came from.  This mission takes them to Boston to retrieve Lysander’s old journals.  All they find there is dead bodies and trouble with the werewolves who think they are at fault.  They have to work together with the wolves to solve this problem.

As with the previous two books, this was one that captured my attention and held it throughout the entire book.  the style of writing appeals to me and I just feel like I have a connection with the characters.  The most frustrating part of this book is the end, a  HUGE cliffhanger!  I cannot wait for more from this dynamic group.  What I liked the most about this book is the addition of the werewolves and witches.  I think it rounded the story out.  I also liked that there was not a lot of talk about the hunting itself.  All in all, another great story by Katie Salidas.

My Rating

Another good story!

Interview and Giveaway: Raven’s Kiss by Toni Lotempio

All About….TONI LOTEMPIO

Hello!  I’m Toni LoTempio, author of Paranormal Romance/Romantic Suspense/YA Fantasy!  I’ve been writing ever since I was old enough to read, when I didn’t like the endings of the stories my mother read me I simply rewrote them J  Even though I write mainly in the paranormal genre, I have also written straight horror, as well as contemporary romance/suspense.
In 1995, I joined the staff of SUSABELLA PASSENGERS AND FRIENDS, a pulp magazine for collectors of antique children’s literature (Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, etc.)  Currently I’ve written over 300 articles for that magazine, and I was the first recipient of their Margaret Sutton Award for Distinguished Writing in 1998.  I joined the staff of NIGHT OWL REVIEWS IN January 2011 as the suspense reviewer/columnist.  My column, DARK STREETS, which features articles on suspense authors and their novels, is featured on a monthly basis. I love to spotlight new talent, so if you’re a suspense author, please contact me!
In 2007, Whiskey Creek Press published BOUND BY BLOOD, a tale of possession, and EBONY, which deals with zombies and the dark side of man. EBONY was #2 on the Fictionwise bestseller list for e-books for the month of July 2007, beating out Stephen King’s Lisey’s Story. (and no one was more shocked than I, LOL) In 2010, after countless attempts to land another agent, I took the advice of a fellow author HP Mallory, and self published NO REST FOR THE WICCA, which has been on Amazon’s list of top one hundred in Occult since March 2011.  My short story, THE SACRIFICE, appears in the e-published anthology KISS ME KILL ME, and I also have a YA fantasy, MY SUPERHERO SISTER on B&N and Amazon.  A complete listing of my books appears at the end of this bio.
Currently single, I work full time and live in Clifton, NJ, with  my muses:  Rocco, Maxx, Gata and Trixie.  (Rocco is also known as Rocco the SciFi Blogging Cat and has appeared on the SciFi Saturday Night website and radio show, and also on the Kids Need To Read website where he holds the distinction of being the first (and possibly only!) blogging cat to support this charity!)
I love hearing from fans, so please feel free to friend me on FACEBOOK, and visit my website, www.tonilotempio.webs.com  Rocco and I post daily M-F on his blog, www.catsbooksmorecats.blogspot.com

Interview:

What inspired you to write this book?

I wanted to write a book without my staple of vampires, and I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of parallel time ever since I first saw it on Dark Shadows, so I just did some research and decided on Shapeshifters. I mean, think about it. You can turn yourself into anything you want? That’s kinda cool.

What is your favorite screen?

By screen I assume you mean movie? Gone with the Wind hands down. It’s got it all, romance, drama, and a kick-ass heroine.

Who was the hardest character to write?

Finn, simply because at times it’s hard for me to get inside a man’s head
Which character was the easies for you to connect with? – Raven, without a doubt. I took a lot of my qualities (especially the snarkiness) and infused her with them.

Was there anything taken out of the book that you were upset about?

since it’s self-published, no. but I have worked with editors who have removed stuff that I scratched my head over

Who is the biggest inspiration in your life?

My friend Vi who lives in Arizona- she is, as I’ve always said, My Muse

Is there anything that inspires you that you have never told anyone about?

sometimes when it’s quiet and I think about my parents, and how much I miss them – their belief in me and my writing has always inspired me.

Quick Questions:

Black or White – Charcoal Gray
Coke or Pepsi – neither – Iced Tea
Cat or Dog – Hah, Cat definitely (or the four I have at home will kill me)
Cake or Ice Cream – I’m an ice cream gal – especially pistachio
Summer or Winter – Fall
Print books or ebooks – Print! I’m old fashioned that way J

Review and Giveaway: Embraced by Blood by Laurie London

Details: Embraced by Blood by Laurie London

  • Pub. Date: June 2011
  • Publisher: Harlequin
  • Paperback , 384pp
  • Sales Rank: 50,361

Summary

Alfonso Serrano is a hunted man. For months he’s managed to elude the Darkbloods, vengeful foes who won’t rest until he’s dead. But he still craves one dangerous temptation: Lily DeGraff, the sexy Guardian agent he’ll risk anything to protect.
Lily is a wanted woman. Her talent for tracking Sweet—a rare blood type that’s addictive to vampires—makes her a prime target for enemy capture. Her only hope is the stealthy vampire operative who stole into her bed…then left her in despair. Danger aside, Lily won’t let Alfonso near her heart again—until an irresistible hunger threatens to draw them back together… and into an assassin’s snare.

My Thoughts:

I have not read the first book in this series so I was a bit worried that I would not understand what was going on.  Laurie London did a great job of giving enough background  that it was very realistic to pick this book up from this point and understand some of the story line without having read book 1.  That is one things that I really appreciated.  The whole story was not repeated just the pieces that were going to be necessary to move into book two understanding Alfonso’s heart break and distrust as a hunted man and Lily’s concern with her abilities.

It seems to me that both of them are trying to keep their hearts safe but both know that they need to stop the DarkBloods from rounding up the Sweetbloods.  I found the dynamic between them to be romantic and interesting.  This is another good vampire world that is just a bit different that the rest.

My Rating:

I found this to be a pretty good read worth checking out.

Hunters & PreySummary:  Hunters & Prey by Katie Salidas

  • Pub. Date: December 2010
  • Publisher: Rising Sign Books
  • Format: Paperback , 300pp

Summary:

Becoming a vampire saved Alyssa from death, but the price was high: the loss of everything and everyone attached to her mortal life. She’s still learning to cope when a surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum’s most fearsome hunter, sends her fleeing back to the world she once knew, and Fallon, the friend she’s missed more than anything.Alyssa breaks vampire law by revealing her new, true self to her old friend, a fact which causes strong division in the group that should support her most: her clan. Worse yet, her revelation entangles Fallon in the struggle between vampires and hunters and The Acta Sanctorum is ready to attack again, with a new army of hybrid creations: the Frenzy Soldiers. If Alyssa hopes to survive and keep her mortal friend safe, she’ll have to be willing to make a deal with the enemy, and regain her clan’s support. It will take everyone working together in a precarious truce to fight against the Acta Sanctorum’s new threat.

My Thoughts:

Just when I thought that the sexual tension between Lysander and Alyssa could not get any stronger it does.  Alyssa heads out to hunt on her own and comes face to face with Santino.  This terrifying face that has haunted her since their previous escape.  She does what first comes to though and runs, she ends up in her old familiar coffee house face to face with her best friends, Fallon.  Alyssa has been missing for weeks and despite everything Lysander has told her she tells Fallon the truth only to have Fallon used as bait.  Alyssa finds herself in a horrible place, drained of blood by the Acta Sanctorum and locked in a room with Fallon.  She knows that they mean for her to feed from Fallon but she cannot do so.  Suddenly, Santino comes to her rescue and helps her and Fallon get out.  Lysander is very angry with her but also very concerned about losing his mate.  Together, they all go forward to fight the newest fighters out there to destroy the Vampires!

This was another outstanding expansion on Lysander and Alyssa story.  Katie Salidas has stayed true to the character and only made me more drawn to Lysander in this book.  He has such a dark haunted past and his feeling seem so deep.  Alyssa still appears to be the selfish young girl.  She puts her wants in front of the needs of those vampires closest to her without much though.  Fallon seems to handle all of this craziness with out too much of a passing thought while she is scared she never backs down with I really enjoyed.

All in all, a great story and I am really looking forward to the next installment!

Immortalis Carpe Noctem

Summary:  Immortalis Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas

  • Pub. Date: January 2010
  • Publisher: Rising Sign Books
  • Format: Paperback , 346pp

Synopsis:

Explore the emotional upheaval that is the transformation from human to vampire.

Bleeding to death after brutal mugging on the campus of UNLV, Twenty-five year old Alyssa, is rescued by the cold and aloof, vampire, Lysander. Taking pity on her, he shares the gift-and curse-of immortality. She awakens as a vampire and is soon devastated by harsh realities of her new way of life: An unyielding thirst for blood as well as the loss of her friends, her independence, and her humanity.
As if having her humanity stripped away was not enough to make life interesting, Alyssa finds out her “turning”, did not go unnoticed by the rest of undead society. Old enemies; an ancient sect of vampire hunters, known as the Acta Sanctorum, as well as a powerful Vampire mistress, each set plans in motion to destroy both Alyssa and Lysander.
Only by accepting her new-found immortality, seizing the night, will Alyssa hope to survive. She and Lysander must fight together against two sets of enemies bent on destroying them both.

Sample Chapter:

My Thoughts:

This was a different take on the vampire world and what happens in it.  Alyssa after being stood up by her best friend is walking alone home to her apartment when she is brutally attacked by two men who mean to rape and kill her.  When out of nowhere come a third man to her rescue.  When Alyssa come to she asks for her savior’s name, Lysander.  He first apologizes to her for what he has done.  He has turned her into a vampire going again the rules of the coven he is not technically a part of.  Alyssa immediately struggles with the fact that she is going to have to kill in order to survive.  Lysander takes time to teach her how to hunt and even gives her the opportunity to try blood from the butcher however this does not go well and Alyssa continues to struggle.  They are visited one day by Edmond, a messenger from Kallisto, Lysander’s maker and previous mate.  Lysander has broken the rules and Kallisto wants him to resolve this, he is given 30 days to resolve but the Saints arrive in town prior to this and all bets are off.  Will Alyssa and Lysander make it through alive?

First, I am going to start with what didn’t work well for me in this book just to get it out of the way.  Alyssa is so whining and her inner monologue just drove me crazy through sections of the book.  I know that she did not want to drink blood and kill people because it make her feel like a monster but it was rehashed over and over again.  For me it just got old and whinny.

Okay, now that I got that out of my system, I really enjoyed the story.  There was a great dynamic between all of the characters in this book and it was very different to view the vampire world broken down into covens and the different politics that this creates.  I give Katie Salidas kudos for creating this diverse world and making the rules work.  The most interesting for me was the Saints. Vampires created by the Roman Catholic church to go out and kill the evil in the world, even though they are evil themselves.

I enjoyed the romance and frustration around romance in this book.  Alyssa and Lysander have an unique relationship full of give and take that is put to the test when a friendly coven of travelers shows up on Lysander’s doorsteps and he invites them to stay.  Alyssa does not feel safe but must learn to trust Lysander.

My favorite part of the book is watching Alyssa grow into her new talents and as a person.  Overall, this was a great story and put together well.

My Rating:

4 Penguins!  Good story!

Author Bio –
So you want to know a little about me? Well, I’m in my mid thirties, married 11 years to a wonderful supportive man–yes, he’s a hunk– who gave me three beautiful–noisy– children aged ten, seven and four. I work as a webmistress/customer service rep from home and in my spare time–of which there is tragically too little– I write, read or Wii.

I was born in British Columbia, but being a military brat lived a little bit everywhere–Quebec, New Brunswick, Labrador, Virginia (USA) and finally Ontario. My family and I currently reside in the historic town of Bowmanville, about an hour or so out of Toronto.

Wow was that ever boring!!! Now for the fun stuff.

I’m writing fantasy the way I like it–hot with a touch of magic. I enjoy reading and writing stories that push the envelope of what we consider normal, and I love to cross the line into fantasy. I tend to have alot of sexual tension in my tales as I think all torrid love affairs start with a tingle in our tummies. My heroes are very male, you could even say border line chest thumping at times. So if you want a truly sensitive man, I am not for you. But that said, my men will do almost anything for the one they love. Even babysit.

I’d love to tell you more, but judging from the sounds in the living room the children are at it again, which means I’ll need a mop and loads of patience. What I really need is a robot maid like Jane Jetson! Thanks for checking me out and hope to see you again soon.

Piper's Fury coverart-small

    • Pub. Date: March 2011
    • Publisher: Crescent Moon Press
    • Format: Paperback , 288pp

BLURB

It’s an empath thing…

Using your “powers” to help the Dark Hills Police Department hunt down serial killers doesn’t leave much time for dating. Not that Piper Anast is complaining. The last thing she needs is some guy brushing up against her and pumping his pornographic thoughts into her head.
When she meets Bennett Slade, a sexy, tormented vampire, Piper stumbles headlong into a telepathic connection with his missing daughter. She can’t leave the kid to the evil surrounding her unwanted visions, nor can she resist her draw to Slade. He’s the first guy she’s been able to touch vision-free in, well, forever.
As she and Slade close in on the evil creature holding his daughter, Piper’s powers morph into a deadly fury. To save Slade’s daughter-and herself-Piper must face down demons she never knew she had and trust the one thing she keeps from everyone.

Her heart.

My Thoughts

I didn’t know what to expect going into this book.  I purposely did not read the blurb before I read the book, I wanted to go into it fresh and really just enjoy the story.  I was pleasantly surprised with the story line and characters.  Let’s get into the story a bit
So vampire stories are every where these days so in some ways that means that the stories are all starting to sound a little bit the same.  I am happy to say that Piper’s Fury brings some new ideas to the table and that makes it very interesting for me.  I think one of my favorite things about this book is that Piper is aware in the beginning of this story that vampires, or Strigoii Vii, as they are called in this book.  It makes it a very different story in comparison to a lot of stories out there.  I think that whole premise of the Strigoii Vii is a bit different as well too.  They are actually humans who have a gene mutation and need to have blood to regenerate their blood and that they can eat human food and still need both.  This is very different for me.  I like the story line that Piper is approached by  Slade to research his daughter’s disappearance, five year prior.  Piper immediately refused as too much time has passed but then she has a crazy dream of Slade’s daughter begging for her help.   The story takes crazy twists and turns from here everything from the love story between Slade and Piper to demons and betrayal of Slade’s people .  I enjoyed the love scenes are pretty hot and steamy which I really enjoyed in the story.  While the are very steamy it was just what I was looking for out of this book!  Maybe not at first but once I got to know Piper and her anger issues and lack of personal awareness I really wanted for Slade to win her over and have them get involved.  The story was left in a place where I cannot wait for the next book to come out so I can find out what is going to happen.  I think that my favorite part of the book was there was always some twist that was coming up so I could not pin down the story until it was over.  the one thing that I did get a little frustrated the fact that Piper was not aware of the power that she had and I really never understood why anger gave her the power.  The book started pretty slow but it did pick up quickly.  All in all I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!

My Rating

4.5 of 5 stars.  I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait for book #2.

Romance Trading Cards

The big hype right now around the conference and internet network is the newest creation in promo. Romance Trading Cards. Similar, to the baseball cards our brothers had when we were younger—and some still do—they are designed for readers of romance. I happen to think they are great! It’s a fun way to keep your characters alive even after the book has ended.
Now, do I think that women will sit around their tea parties and actually trade these cards. No. But, I do think that when we’re sitting around wondering which book we’d like to re-read, it would be nice to sift through our cards to decide which fantasy we’d like to relive. LOL!
I’ve tried my hand at it, and please keep in mind I’m completely technology challenged. So, my graphics are bit hazy, but you get the jist. I’m traveling the circuit this week with several of my Crescent Moon Press sista’s and we’ve decided to offer up a fabulous prize!
